ITINERARY

DAY 1

Friday, 17 July
Rotterdam

Meals: Dinner

Hotel: SS Rotterdam

We recommend arriving to Rotterdam by the early afternoon, so you have time to explore this remarkable city. Coordinate your arrival with us so some one can meet you upon arrival to Rotterdam and escort you to our unique hotel- the SS Rotterdam. She was once the “grande dame” of the Holland America Line fleet, sailing from Rotterdam to New York beginning in 1958. She has been lovingly restored and moored in the Rotterdam harbor, where she now takes guests on a cruise through history and nostalgia as a 4-star hotel.

In the early evening, our group will come together and go to the nearby Fenix Food Factory, where we’ll enjoy a tour of the artisan food makers’ stalls before sitting down to a chef-curated dinner of local products. After dinner, you can take a quick water taxi ride back to the SS Rotterdam or continue exploring the city. Your tour director can suggest some off the beaten path places to enjoy authentic Dutch nightlife.

DAY 2

Saturday, 18 July
Dordrecht via Kinderdijk

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Hotel: Villa Augustus

We will say “goodbye” to the steamship Rotterdam and “hello” to our historic tall ship. Once aboard, anyone wishing to assist the crew can help them raise the sails,
navigate and maybe even take the helm! We will use sail power as much as possible to reach our first stop - the UNESCO world heritage site of Kinderdijk. Here we will walk amongst the 19 historic windmills which aided the Dutch in their fight against the water.

After our private tour of the windmills, we will return to the ship for a lunch fit for a captain before we continue sailing to Dordrecht. There, in the early evening, we will disembark the ship and bid a warm goodbye to her hospitable crew. The town of Dordrecht, one of the oldest in the Netherlands, is full of history, beauty and nature. Our hotel blends these elements very nicely and will serve as a perfect base for relaxation or exploration.  Consider visiting the Kyck over den Dyck flour (wind)mill, the Grote Kerk or the Dordrecht museum.

Please note: We will be onboard the sailing ship for approximately 6 hours. You will be able to actively assist in sailing or relax both inside and outside. There is a bar onboard, bathrooms, comfortable seats and for most of the journey there will be cellular service, but there is no wifi.

DAY 3

Sunday, 19 July
Dordrecht and the Biesbosch National Park

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Hotel: Villa Augustus

In the late morning we will depart for the Biesbosch National Park, one of Northwestern Europe’s most important freshwater tidal wetlands. Here we will enjoy a relaxing
morning and afternoon of exploration. We will all pay a visit the park’s visitor’s center to learn more about the waterfowl and mammals that rely on this rich ecosystem. Then, you can share an electric boat with your traveling companions, or set out in a kayak, canoe, stand up paddleboard or bicycle (rentals included) to explore the wetlands and islands. Or find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the peace of nature. We will all meet in a scenic spot for an included picnic lunch.

The rest of the afternoon and evening are yours to explore or relax, accordingly.

DAY 4

Monday, 20 July
Dordrecht to Home

Meals: Breakfast

Enjoy one last leisurely morning in Dordrecht before your departure home or to your next travel destination! For those who don't have to rush away, join your tour director on a guided walking tour of historic Dordrecht.
For those who will be traveling onward and need advice, feel free to ask us for suggestions!
